Notre Dame defeated North Carolina 44-34 on Saturday night as the Fighting Irish moved to 7-1 on the season.

Kyren Williams was arguably Notre Dame’s best player, rushing 22 times for 199 yards and 1 touchdown. That score was an important moment in the game — it was a 91-yard scamper that put the Fighting Irish up by double digits.

Jack Coan was also productive for Notre Dame. He completed 16-of-23 passes for 213 yards and 1 touchdown. Tyler Buchner also threw a touchdown pass.

On the other side, Sam Howell was excellent outside of one major mistake early in the fourth quarter. One play after Williams’ 91-yard TD, Howell threw an interception that allowed Notre Dame to extend its lead to 14 points.

Still, Howell completed 24-of-31 passes for 341 yards and 1 touchdown. He also led the Tar Heels in rushing with 102 yards and 1 touchdown on 17 carries.

Receiver Josh Downs continued his career season with 10 catches for 142 yards.

Notre Dame is now 7-1 on the season and is still in the mix for College Football Playoff consideration. The first committee rankings will be revealed on Tuesday night.
