Report: NBC’s deal with the Big Ten is expected to reignite Notre Dame-Michigan rivalry

NBC’s reported broadcasting deal with the Big Ten will likely mean Notre Dame will add more Big Ten schools to its schedule, according to a report.

One team Notre Dame could play again is Michigan. According to Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand, the NBC-Big Ten deal could lead to Notre Dame facing the Wolverines on a much more regular basis.

The last time Notre Dame played Michigan was Oct. 27, 2019. Notre Dame and Michigan played every year from 2002 to 2014. After 2014, the rivalry took 3 years off and returned in 2018 and 2019. The 2 teams are currently not scheduled to play again until 2033.

Notre Dame has partnered with NBC since 1991 and is expected to do so for the foreseeable future. Notre Dame is currently negotiating an extension to its contract with NBC, which is set to expire in 2025.

With a new contract from NBC, Notre Dame is expected to remain independent and continue to work with NBC

. The connection to NBC will allow Notre Dame to schedule more games with Big Ten teams.

In 2022, Notre Dame’s only Big Ten opponent will be Ohio State.

Previously, when Notre Dame played a Big Ten team on the road, the games were broadcasted on ESPN, ABC, or Fox Sports. With ESPN no longer being involved for a new media rights deal, the NBC deal would presumably be able to broadcast Notre Dame’s road games against Big Ten opponents.
