Notre Dame defensive lineman Aidan Keanaaina will reportedly miss the 2022 season after tearing his ACL in a recent practice.

That’s according to Irish Illustrated’s Tim Prister. The news has since been confirmed by multiple outlets.

Keanaaina hadn’t yet broken through into Notre Dame’s defensive line rotation, but was reportedly starting to make progress. He entered this offseason with 1 career tackle.

He was expected to contribute as Notre Dame’s backup nose tackle this season. Kurt Hinish, who played a big role at nose tackle in 2021, graduated this offseason.

Hinish’s younger brother, Donovan, could be an option to fill Keanaaina’s place this year. He was a 3-star prospect in the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. However, he’s not an early enrollee so he would have to get up to speed quickly this summer in order to make an impact as a true freshman.

Keanaaina will still have three years of eligibility remaining upon his return in 2023. He was the No. 41 overall defensive tackle in the class of 2020, per 247Sports composite rankings.

Notre Dame’s spring game is on April 23.
