Tobias Merriweather seems to be having a great spring as he enters his 2nd season at Notre Dame.

The sophomore receiver earned high praise from Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli on Friday afternoon.

“Tobias is out there making plays,” he told reporters on Friday. “Two days in a row he’s gone up and made some big plays down the field.”

Merriweather’s emergence would be welcome news for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame tried to get him involved in the offense at different points last season, but he only caught 1 pass for 41 yards as a true freshman.

His role in the offense appears to be changing, especially with new quarterback Sam Hartman under center.

Here’s a clip of Hartman finding Merriweather on a deep route, which includes a great adjustment to the ball from the sophomore wideout:

Receiver has been an issue for Notre Dame over the past couple of seasons, but the Irish are hoping to take a big step forward in that department in 2023.

In addition to Merriweather’s development, Notre Dame also brought in Virginia Tech transfer receiver Kaleb Smith this offseason.

Notre Dame’s spring game will be held on April 22.
