Tommy Rees explains lack of playing time for Tobias Merriweather so far

Notre Dame is still looking for ways to involve true freshman receiver Tobias Merriweather into its offense.

On Tuesday night, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees addressed Merriweather’s lack of opportunities so far.

“We’ve had plays the last 2 weeks that are specifically tagged for him,” Rees said. “It just didn’t happen, right? It’s not anything specific to Tobias.

“Tobias has been great. He knows what’s been in, he knows what hasn’t. He knows there’s opportunities for him. We talk constantly. He’s with coach Stuckey all the time. There’s no lack of desire to play Tobias.”

Amongst Notre Dame wide receivers this season, only Lorenzo Styles has managed to cross the 100-yard threshold through 5 games. Tight end Michael Mayer i

s also above 100 yards on the year.

Merriweather was one of Notre Dame’s top-ranked commitments in the class of 2022. With Notre Dame’s issues at the receiver position this season, Merriweather was thought to be in for some early playing time.

And while those opportunities could still come, they haven’t been there through 5 games. Merriweather has not caught a pass yet this season.

That could change as early as this Saturday as Notre Dame faces BYU in Las Vegas.
