Tommy Rees is reportedly a candidate for Alabama’s vacant offensive coordinator position.
That’s according to ESPN’s Chris Low, who says Rees has emerged as the “top target” for the role. Low also reports that Rees is scheduled to be in Tuscaloosa on Thursday.
This would be a stunning move for Rees, who played quarterback at Notre Dame from 2010-13. He has been on Notre Dame’s coaching staff since 2017 and chose to remain with the Fighting Irish after the transition from Brian Kelly to Marcus Freeman last offseason.
Notre Dame’s offense had its struggles in 2022, especially in losses to Ohio State, Marshall and Stanford. However, the Fighting Irish still finished the year ranked 4
5th nationally in yards per play despite losing starting quarterback Tyler Buchner in Week 2.
Notre Dame also signed one of the top transfer quarterbacks in the country in Sam Hartman. The Irish’s offense was set to take a big step forward in 2023 with Hartman under center.
Rees, 30, has been Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator since 2020. His only college coaching experience outside of South Bend is one year as a graduate assistant at Northwestern in 2015.
