Damar Hamlin responds to criticism over coat worn at Super Bowl

Damar Hamlin on Wednesday responded to criticism about the coat he wore to the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The Buffalo Bills safety and former Pitt star said he meant no disrespect about the clothing, which depicted the crucifixion with an altered Jesus head. The jacket was a Kanye West Eternal Saint blue varsity jacket.

The back of the jacket featured an illustration of Jesus on the cross under the word “ETERNAL.” The front also showed depiction of Jesus’ face and this text: “Without end or beginning there is no day and no night.”

Hamlin is recovering after he was resuscitated on the field in Cincinnati after he went into cardiac arrest during a game on Jan. 2.

“After talking with my parents I understand how my coat could have offended some people,” Hamlin wrote in a tweet. “It was never my intentions to hurt or disrespect anyone, the coat is abstract art to me. It says Eternal which I am Eternally thankful to my Savior!
