Phil Jurkovec demoted as Pitt’s starting QB, per report

Phil Jukrovec has been removed as Pitt’s starting quarterback, according to a report.

That’s per the Post-Gazette’s Noah Hiles, who says that Jurkovec’s teammates learned of the news on Wednesday morning. The report cites multiple sources and says Christian Veilleux w

ill serve as the team’s starter.

The report says that Jurkovec has actually been demoted all the way to 3rd string. Nate Yarnell is expected to serve as Veilleux’s backup in the coming weeks.

Pitt’s reported decision to bench Jurkovec comes as the team will be on bye in Week 6. Jurkovec has been one of the least-efficient passers at the FBS level so far this season. His passer efficiency rating of 124.56 ranks 94th nationally and 12th in the ACC.

He h

as completed 50.9% of his passes so far this season for 818 yards, 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Veilleux began his career at Penn State but transferred to Pitt this offseason. So far in 2023, he has completed 12-of-27 passes for 145 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Pitt will face No. 25 Louisville next week as it comes out of its bye week. The Panthers currently sit at 1-4 and will need a hot streak in order to reach bowl eligibility this season.
