ACC suspends Buddy Boeheim for Duke game after altercation with Florida State player

Syracuse star Buddy Boeheim will miss the Orange’s quarterfinal showdown with Duke on Thursday after he punched FSU forward Wyatt Wilkes on Wednesday.

Boeheim’s punch connected with Wilkes after the two were battling for position in the lane. Here’s a clip:

Boeheim apologized for the incident shortly after the game. His father, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, downplayed the punch in a postgame press conference.

“I saw the play, the kid pushed him twice, I think it was inadvertent,” Boeheim told reporters after the game. “It wasn’t much of a punch.”

Boeheim was Syracuse’s most consistent player this season and was named first-team All ACC on Monday. He led t

he conference in scoring this year with 19.7 points per game.

Syracuse has struggled mightily vs. Duke this year. The Orange have lost both games to the Blue Devils by 20+ points — the two biggest margins of defeat in series history.

Syracuse would have to win the NCAA Tournament to have a chance at making the field. An NIT berth isn’t likely either.

Tipoff vs. Duke is at 12:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.
