Jim Boeheim apologizes for calling out ACC rivals for ‘buying’ teams

Jim Boeheim has apologized for comments he made about other ACC programs and their roster-building techniques over the weekend.

On Saturday, Boeheim accused Wake Forest, Miami and Pittsburgh of “buying” teams through NIL

.

He now says he has apologized to the programs he mentioned and says he believes they are all in compliance with NCAA rules.

“It was not my intention to imply otherwise,” Boeheim said. Here’s his full statement:

Here are his initial comments, which he made in an interview with ESPN’s Pete Thamel:

“This is an awful place we’re in in college basketball,” Boehiem said. “Pittsburgh bought a team. OK, fine. My [big donor] talks about it, but he doesn’t give anyone any money. Nothing. Not one guy. Our guys make like $20,000. Wake Forest bought a team. Miami bought a team. … It’s like, ‘Really, this is where we are?’ That’s really where we are, and it’s only going to get worse.”

Boeheim, 78, has been Syracuse’s head coach since 1976-77. He also said over the weekend that he will “probably” return as head coach

for next season.

Syracuse is 14-10 overall and 7-6 in ACC play this season. The Orange are likely to miss out on the NCAA Tournament for the 2nd straight season. Syracuse will be in action again on Wednesday against Florida State.
