Jim Boeheim hints at potential retirement after loss to Wake Forest in ACC Tournament

Jim Boeheim, after 47 seasons at Syracuse, appears to be headed towards retirement.

Boeheim met with reporters on Wednesday afternoon following his team’s elimination from the ACC Tournament. The Orange, with a 17-15 overall record, have likely played their last game of the season.

Asked about retirement, Boeheim was vague in some ways but transparent in others. Ultimately, he said, the decision would be up to the university. However, he did not say that he wanted to come back for a 48th season.

Boeheim also said he made a “retirement address” on Saturday after Syracuse’s win over Wake Forest in the regular season finale. However, the 78-year-old said no one “picked up on it.”

If he does retire, it would mean the end of one of the most prolific coaching careers in college basketball history. Boeheim is 2nd on the all-time wins list for Division 1 men’s college basketball coaches behind only Mike Krzyzewski.

His career accolades include 1 National Championship and 5 Final Fours. He’s also a member of both the Naismith Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
