Jim Boeheim on Syracuse’s eventual succession plan: ‘We have a plan in place’

While Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim isn’t necessarily ready to retire, he confirmed Wednesday that a succession plan is already in place for when that time comes.

Boeheim discussed the broader plan — without many details — with ESPN radio in Syracuse on Wednesday.

“I’m not going to tell you or anybody when this is going to be,” Boeheim said. “We have a plan in place. A good plan, an ironclad plan. It’s not my decision. I’m not naming the coach like people say all the time.”

Here’s a clip of his comments:

Boeheim is about to finish his 46th year as Syracuse’s head coach — a staggering run that spans back to when the Orange were an Independent back in the late 1970’s.

Talk of Boeheim’s departure has increased in recent years, especially with the retirements of longtime ACC coaches Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski. It’s also increased as the Orange (15-15) are wrapping up their worst season record-wise since 1968-69.

Still Boeheim, 77, continues to say he intends on coaching next season. The Orange have the nation’s No. 25 recruiting class coming to campus next season, according to 247Sports Composite rankings

. The class is headlined by 4-star forwards Chris Bunch and Justin Taylor.

Syracuse hosts Miami in its regular season finale on Saturday.
