Jim Boeheim reaction: Fans, media reflect on Syracuse coach's retirement
Jim Boeheim and Syracuse announced on Wednesday that the legendary coach would retire, as the Orange fell in the ACC Tournament to Wake Forest.
With a legendary coach moving on, reaction to the move came quickly, and from around college basketball as fans and media alike weighed in with their thoughts and memories.
A Hall of Famer, Jim Boeheim’s 47-year tenure as coach at Syracuse came to an awkward end on Wednesday, with the university saying Orange assistant Adrian Autry has been promoted to the job. This was after a press conference where Boeheim said he gave a retirement announcement last week, and it was up to the university to decide.
Here’s a sample of the reaction:
There will never be another Jim Boeheim. The greatest coach, father, and mentor I could ever ask for. A man that gave a city, program, and university everything he had his whole life with countless accomplishments. Excited for a lot of golf in our future, love you pops ❤️🍊 pic.twitter.com/EAtDnjSZEw

In 2017, the ACC had Pitino, Roy W, Coach K, Boeheim and Brey.
Truly a new world order in the league.

Jim Boeheim goes out following one final salty press conference in Greensboro of all places with zero fanfare or advanced notice to media.
It’s like the end of “The Sopranos.” People will be frustrated at first but honestly, it’s perfect and the clues were there the whole time.

In last two years, the top 3 college basketball coaches in terms of total number of wins, (3221 by #CoachK, #JimBoeheim and #RoyWilliams) have retired representing 35% of all wins by top 10 coaches.

Jim Boeheim reached at least 20 wins 34 times in the regular season and at least 25 wins 19 times. He is the first men’s coach to win an NCAA Tournament game in six different decades. #Syracuse @Cuse_MBB

I really thought Jim Boeheim’s career would end with an epic “I quit” speech like Nick Nolte in ‘Blue Chips,’ but life ain’t a movie. A weird time for Syracuse basketball fans. 🍊 pic.twitter.com/4bto7N9v3f

Today is a day many people expected, but still is sad nonetheless. One of the all time greats, Jim Boeheim, a coach I grew up watching, and whose 2-3 system I used in rec basketball, has stepped down. A national championship winner, goes down as one of the best!

Jim Boeheim steps down. 47yrs coaching the Cuse with 1 NCAA title. He has coached at Syracuse longer than I have been alive. Impressive career.

Obviously we all had our recent frustrations with Jim Boeheim but what a hell of a career and coach and its gonna be weird without him on the sideline. Nothing but respect and gratitude for that man and he will certainly be missed. Thanks for all the excitement coach. 🍊
