Syracuse hiring new OL coach after assistant departs for SEC program, per reports

Syracuse will have a new offensive line coach in 2023.

According to On3’s Matt Zenitz, Mike Schmidt is leaving for Mississippi State and will be replaced by Steve Farmer, a former Texas Tech and Tulsa assistant.

Schmidt joined Dino Babers’ Syracuse staff in 2021. Ahead of the 2022 season, Schmidt added run game coordinator to his title with the Orange. The Orange have had an elite ground game running behind Schmidt’s linemen.

Schmidt will be reuniting with his former San Diego State colleague Zach Arnett, who is now the head coach at Mississippi State. Schmidt played at San Diego State from 2005-08 and then got into coaching as a graduate assistant in 2009, a position he held through 2

011 before becoming offensive line coach in 2012. Arnett was a San Diego State GA from 2011-13 before moving up to linebackers coach in 2014 and becoming defensive coordinator in 2018. Arnett and Schmidt were both San Diego State assistants from 2011-19.

Farmer joins the Orange after a season at Tulsa. He was Texas Tech’s offensive line coach from 2019-21. Farmer coached 6 All-Big 12 linemen with the Red Raiders. Two of Farmer’s lines were among the top 30 in sacks allowed.
