Virginia will not be able to play in the Fenway Bowl this week due to COVID-19, it was announced on Sunday afternoon.
The Cavaliers were set to face SMU this week, but do not have enough players to participate in the game.
“We are extremely disappointed the team will not be able to participate in the inaugural Fenway Bowl,” UVA athletic director Carla Williams said in a statement
. “Playing this game was something our team very much looked forward to and it is unfortunate Coach Mendenhall will not have one last opportunity to coach this group.”
This bowl was expected to be the final g
ame of the Bronco Mendenhall era. Mendenhall surprisingly stepped down earlier this month and will now be replaced by Brent Pry.
The cancelation will also prevent quarterback Brennan Armstrong from breaking the ACC’s single-season passing yardage record. Armstrong finishes with 4,444 yards, which 150 yards shy of Deshaun Watson’s ACC record.
Armstrong has said he will not enter the transfer portal, but may end up entering the 2022 NFL Draft this offseason.
