Furman upset Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, as the 13-seed Paladins had a lead late against the 4-seeded Cavaliers, and then delivered the blow in the final seconds to win 68-67.
A turnover and 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining from JP Pegues proved to be the game-winning shot.
“I had full belief in the shot, I was missing all night, but that didn’t matter,” he told truTV after the game.
The 13-4 matchups last year were all decided by single digits, and this one again delivered an entertaining game at the beginning of the Big Dance. Virginia used a 7-0 run that ended with 12.3 seconds remaining to re-take the lead, until Furman recovered.
Furman was led by Jalen Slawson, who scored 19 points, and led 4 players in double figures, including Pegues who had 11. Kadin Shedrick paced Virginia with 15 points, and Reece Beekman added 14 points. Beekman had a last-second attempt that missed from long range.
Furman hadn’t been to the NCAA Tournament in 43 years, and will survive for another game on Saturday against the winner of San Diego State-Charleston.
