The NCAA is granting an extra year of eligibility to Virginia players whose eligibility was set to expire in 2022, according to a report.
That news was confirmed by UVA athletic director Carla Williams in a story by the Daily Progresses’ Greg Madia
. The decision comes in the wake of the shooting death of three Virginia football players on UVA grounds last month.
As a result of the shooting, Virginia’s final two regular season games against Coastal Carolina and Virginia Tech were canceled. Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry were the players killed in the shooting back on Nov. 14. The shooting took p
lace on a bus that was returning from Washington D.C. for a field trip.
Virginia has six fifth-year seniors listed on its roster who will presumably be able to benefit from this decision. Another seven players on the roster are classified as “graduate students.”
It’s unclear how many of these players intend to use their extra season of eligibility.
Virginia finished Year 1 under Tony Elliott with a 3-7 record.
