Penn State defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter linked to Virginia job

Bronco Mendenhall shocked all of college football earlier this week when he announced he was stepping down from the head coaching job at Virginia.

Mendenhall did good work with the Cavaliers, making it to four bowl games in six seasons. However, now Virginia will be tasked with finding his replacement.

It didn’t take long for several media members to link Penn State co-defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter to the job. Poindexter was an assistant at Virginia in various roles from 2003-13. He coached offensive, defense and special teams over the course of that decade with the Cavaliers.

Pointdexter also played at Virginia and was a consensus All-American in 1998. He was also named ACC Defensive Player of the Year for that season and won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens.

Ironically, Virginia Tech already hired Penn State’s other co-defensive coordinator this cycle in Brent Pry. The Hokies and Cavaliers also made coaching changes six seasons ago when they hired Justin Fuente and Mendenhall, respectively.

Virginia will likely want to make a decision soon as the Early Signing Period (Dec. 15) is approaching. The Cavaliers will learn their bowl opponent this weekend.
