Rapid reaction: Virginia runs out of steam vs. BYU

Virginia led BYU at the half 42-38, but the Cougars stormed back in the second half to win 66-49.

The Cavaliers did well to bounce back from an early 21-point deficit, led by five first-half touchdowns from quarterback Brennan A

rmstrong. Unfortunately for Virginia, its defense found no answers for BYU in the second half.

While the Cougars continued their offensive assault well into Sunday morning on the east coast, Virginia’s best offensive possessions came before the break.

Virginia scored just once in the second half before Armstrong had to exit the game with a rib injury. The Cavaliers punted once and turned it over twice in their first four possessions out of the break. BYU responded with five consecutive s

coring drives in the second half.

Before leaving the game, Armstrong was exceptional. He completed 21-of-33 passes for 329 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also contributed on the ground, rushing the ball 11 times for 94 yards and 2 scores. He injured his rib while trying to fight for a first down in the fourth quarter.

Virginia moves to 6-3 on the season, but maintains its 4-2 conference record. The Cavaliers are off next week before hosting Notre Dame on Nov. 13.
