Terry Holland, Virginia basketball coaching legend, passes away at 80

Terry Holland was a legendary coach for Virginia during the 1970s and 80s before beginning a long administrative career. Still the second-winningest coach in Cavs history, Holland passed away Sunday evening at the age of 80.

According to David Teel with the Richmond Times-Dispatch,

Holland had been battling Alzheimer’s since 2019 and had recently been moved to a memory care center within the senior community where he lived with his wife Ann.

“As both a successful coach and respected administrator, Terry Holland leaves an indelible imprint on the University of Virginia, the ACC, college basketball and college athletics,” ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said via statement. “He was a true gentleman that embraced his players and colleagues as family. Our hearts will remain with his wife Ann and the entire Holland family.”

Holland spent time as a head coach at Davidson from 1969-74 before coaching Virginia from 1974-90. He led the Cavs to 9 NCAA Tournament appearances and 2 Final Fours while winning 326 games with the program. Current head coach Tony Bennett is the only Cavs coach with more wins in program history (337).

After wrapping up his coaching career, Holland spent time as an AD for Davidson (1990-94), Virginia (1994-2001) and East Carolina (2004-13).
