Virginia linebacker reportedly killed in shooting at UVA

Virginia linebacker D’Sean Perry was killed in a shooting in UVA’s central grounds on Sunday night, according to a report.

The report comes from The Daily Progress’ Sydney Shuler, who cites confirmation from Perry’s father.

According to an email sent by Virginia president Jim Ryan, three students were killed in the shooting on Sunday night. Two other students were injured and are still receiving medical care, according to Ryan’s email.

Former Virginia walk-on Christopher Jones is the suspect in the shooting and is still at-large, per the police. Jones was on Virginia’s roster in 2018 but did not appear in any games.

Perry recorded two tackles in Virginia’s game against Pittsburgh this weekend. He attended Gulliver Prep High School in Miami, Fla.

Update (10:10 a.m. ET): A second Virginia football player has been identified as a victim: Cavaliers receiver Lavel Davis Jr.

Davis’ cousin shared this message on Monday morning:

According to Richmond.com, Davis’ father wrote in a Facebook post, “Lord please help me.”

Davis was in the midst of a big year Cavaliers. He was tied for the team lead with two touchdowns on the season and was fourth in receiving yards with 372.

Davis was from Dorchester, South Carolina. He attended Woodland High School. This was his third year at Virginia.

Update (11:04 a.m.): 

Virginia president Jim Ryan has confirmed the identity of the third student killed: Virginia receiver Devin Chandler.

Chandler was in his first season at Virginia. He began his collegiate career at Wisconsin. His hometown was Huntersville, North Carolina.

University officials have also announced that the suspect in the shooting, Chris Jones, is in custody.
