Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong announces return for 2022 season

Brennan Armstrong is coming back for another season with Virginia.

The star quarterback announced that news on his Instagram account on Thursday night.

“After a long talk with my family, I’m excited to announce that I will be coming back to the University of Virginia and playing one more year,” Armstrong said in the video.

Armstrong stated earlier this offseason that he was deciding between returning to Virginia or leaving for the NFL Draft. Ultimately, he opted to play one more year of college ball under new coach Tony Elliott.

Elliott has a great reputation as a play caller and a developer at the college level.

His offense should be a great match with Armstrong, who is coming off one of the best seasons in ACC history. Armstrong threw for 4,449 yards in just 11 games. To put that i

nto perspective, Heisman Trophy finalist Kenny Pickett threw for 4,319 yards in 13 games.

Armstrong was well on his way to breaking Deshaun Watson’s ACC single season passing record before missing a game due to injury. Virginia’s bowl game vs. SMU was also canceled due to COVID-19.

Armstrong is currently in second place on Virginia’s all-time career passing yardage leaderboard. He’s trailing only Matt Schaub and could take over the top spot in September of next season. He’s just 6 passing touchdowns away from overtaking Schaub in that category as well.

He joins several other top quarterbacks in the ACC who are returning for next season. Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman, NC State’s Devin Leary, Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke and Louisville’s Malik Cunningham, amongst others, who will be back in 2022.
