Old Dominion offensive coordinator resigns just 3 weeks before opener vs. Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech’s Week 1 opponent, Old Dominion, will have an unexpected coaching vacancy to fill in the coming days.

ODU offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude issued his resignation on Friday afternoon, exactly 3 weeks before the Monarchs host Virginia Tech in Week 1.

Here’s the release from the school:

“We appreciate coach Patenaude’s contributions to our football program during his time at ODU,” athletic director Wood Selig said in a release. “We wish him the best in the future.”

It’s unclear what could have sparked this resignation, but it’s certainly an ideal situation for ODU to be in with fall camp already underway.

This will be the fourth-ever meeting between ODU and Virginia Tech. This will be the Hokies’ first trip back to ODU’s campus since they lost to the Monarchs in 2018. Virginia Tech is 2-1 all-time vs. Old Dominion.

Virginia Tech is expected to name its starting quarterback sometime next week

. Grant Wells and Jason Brown are currently battling for the starting job.

Virginia Tech and ODU will kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 2.
