Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry gives timeline for naming a starting quarterback

Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry has clarified his timeline for naming a starting quarterback.

Pry told reporters on Wednesday that he hopes to name a starter “next week.” That’s via TechSideline’s David Cunningham:

Pry will be deciding between a pair of transfer quarterbacks: Grant Wells and Jason Brown.

Wells is the favorite to win the job after transferring in from Marshall this offseason. He was the Mean Green’s primary starter over the past 2 seasons, throwing for 5,626 yards and 34 touchdowns over that span. However, he also threw 22 interceptions during that time and his passer efficiency rating of 139.4 was only good enough for 7th in Conference USA last season.

Brown arrived in Blacksburg after spending last season at South Carolina. He was a partial starter for the Gamecocks last season but helped lead them to upset wins over Auburn and Florida. He completed 55.6% of his passes for 8 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in his lone season at South Carolina.

Virginia Tech will scrimmage on Wednesday and Saturday this week, Pry added.

Virginia Tech opens the 2022 season with Old Dominion on Sept. 2.
