Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry spent some time on Wednesday gushing about Hokies safety Chamarri Conner.

Conner is entering his 5th season Blacksburg and is one of the leaders in Virginia Tech’s secondary. Pry told reporters that he’s “ultimate captain material,” according to TechSideline’s David Cunningham.

“I don’t know if there’s a more well-rounded player in our program,” Pry added.

Conner is certainly a big part of what the Hokies want to do on defense this season. Even as the Hokies struggled in 2021, he still managed to put up a solid campaign — 85 tackles, 2 sacks, 5 pass deflections and 2 forced fumbles.

Still, there’s plenty of room for improvement from Conner and the rest of the Virginia Tech secondary. Last season, the Hokies allowed a passer efficiency rating of 133.37 — just good enough for 8th in the ACC.

Led by Conner, this Virginia Tech defense has plenty of experience. The Hokies return their top 4 tacklers from last season and 5 of their 6 producers of tackles for loss.

Virginia Tech opens the 2022 season with Old Dominion on Sept. 2.
