Virginia Tech DB announces torn achilles during offseason workout

Virginia Tech defensive back Nyke Johnson announced Friday afternoon that he recently suffered a torn achilles.

This injury comes just a couple months after Johnson had shoulder surgery. He said he was just starting to run again following his shoulder surgery when the achilles injury happened.

Johnson said he has already had surgery on his torn achilles and is in the recovery process.

“I will come back mentally & physically because of the trials that GOD is putting me through,” he wrote in the announcement.

Here’s his announcement:

Johnson is entering his 3rd year with Virginia Tech. He was a 3-star prospect in the Hokies’ 2021 recruiting class. He’s originally from Florence, South Carolina.

He redshirted in 2021 but played as a reserve last season. He appeared in 8 games and recorded 5 tackles, mostly in special teams work. He also scored a touchdown on special teams last season. The score came after he recovered a blocked punt vs. Pittsburgh.

It’s currently unclear when Johnson will be medically cleared to return to the field.
