Virginia Tech has fired head coach Justin Fuente.

Athletic director Whit Babcock made that announcement early Tuesday morning.

“We sincerely appreciate the contributions that Coach Fuente made to our football program and the positive impact he made on our student-athletes during his time at Virginia Tech,” Babcock said in a statement. “While it is never easy to make a change, I believe in order for our football program to attain the type of sustained success that is expected at Virginia Tech, the time was right for new leadership of our football program.

Fuente also released a statement through the Hokies.

Fuente made it nearly 6 seasons in Blacksburg with an overall record of 43-31. The Hokies are coming off a win vs. Duke on Saturday, but are just 5-5 this season and have suffered several tough losses. A 17-3 loss to Boston College in Week 10 seemed to signal the beginning of the end.

J.C. Price will serve as Virginia Tech’s interim head coach for its final two games. The Hokies will close out the season with Miami and Virginia.

Kickoff vs. the Hurricanes is at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
