Virginia Tech added a major piece to its 2022 defensive line on Monday afternoon.

The Hokies picked up a commitment from former Nebraska defensive lineman Pheldarius Payne. Here’s his announcement:

Payne is a former junior college standout who had no issues contributing for the Huskers over the last two seasons 40 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks for Nebraska across 2020 and 2021.

Prior to arriving at Nebraska, Payne played at Lackawanna Community College. Lackawanna is located in Pennsylvania and is a major JUCO pipeline for FBS programs.

Payne was the No. 81 overall JUCO player in the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

This addition should make a significant difference for the Hokies’ defense. Virginia Tech is looking to re-tool its defense this season under first-year head coach Brent Pry.

Virginia Tech’s defense this season will be led by Chris Marve, who previously served as Florida State’s linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator.

Virginia Tech’s spring game is on April 16.
