Virginia Tech records most lopsided win over Virginia in decades

Virginia Tech handed Virginia a thumping it hasn’t experienced in the rivalry in over 60 years. The Hokies beat the Hoos 75-41 on Monday night, the largest margin of victory in the series since 1961.

It looked to be a tight game until Virginia Tech went on a 20-point run in the first half and never looked back. UVA cut VT’s lead to 16-14 at the 9:43 mark of the first half, then everything changed.

Virginia Tech scored the game’s next 20 points over the next eight-plus minutes. The Cavalier offense did not manage to score any points until a Bond dunk with 46 seconds remaining in the half.

The Hokies put any epic collapse worries to rest by scoring the first 7 points of the second half. Virginia finally hit a 3-pointer at the 17:26 mark to get it back to a 24-point game (43-19).

Lynn Kidd was the standout of the night. The Virginia Tech center was the game’s high scorer rebounder, recording 14 points on 5-of-5 field-goal shooting while going 4-of-4 at the free-throw line and grabbing 7 rebounds. Kidd, who played just 18 minutes, also had 3 blocked shots.

Robbie Beran, Tyler Nickel and Mylyjael Poteat were Virginia Tech’s other scorers in double figures on Monday night. The Hokies made 51% of their field goal attempts, including 35% from behind the 3-point line.

Virginia Tech had a 20-point advantage in points off turnovers (24-4), also dominating bench points (30-16), points in the paint (36-26) and assists (17-7).
