Virginia Tech is expected to hire Maryland assistant Elijah Brooks to serve as the team’s next running backs coach, according to a report from On3’s Matt Zenitz.
The move comes as head coach Brent Pry goes through an offseason reshuffling of his staff. Former quarterbacks coach Brad Glenn left this offseason for Cincinnati. Offensive line coach Joe Rudolph left for a job on Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame staff. According to Zenitz, Pry is expected to move current VT running backs coach Stu Holt to tight ends, and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen from tight ends to quarterbacks.
With Brooks’ hire, Pry will be left with just 1 opening on his offensive staff with the offensive line position.
Brooks is a former Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic head coach with an established footprint in the DMV recruiting area. After 8 years with DeMatha, Brooks took over as the running backs coach for Maryland ahead of the 2019 season.
He coached dynamic running back rooms in each of his 4 seasons with the Terps. In 2019, Maryland was 1 of only 2 schools at the Power 5 level to have multiple running backs each score at least 8 touchdowns. In 2020, redshirt senior Jake Funk had his best season as a Terp, leading the FBS in yards per carry (8.6) and ranking 8th nationally in rushing yards per game (129). Funk ran for 516 yards and 4 scores in just 4 games. In 2022, Roman Hemby ran for 989 yards and 10 touchdowns
Two of Brooks’ running backs at Maryland have been drafted into the NFL.
