Virginia Tech suffers decommitment from elite athlete out of Tennessee

Virginia Tech has 1 less player in its 2024 class as of Sunday as Marcellus Barnes Jr. decommitted.

Barnes is a 3-star corner out of Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie School. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 38 CB and No. 10 prospect in Tennessee in the 2024 class.

Barnes thanked the Hokies’ coaching staff and left a message for fans.

“I’ve made a tough decision to decommit from Virginia Tech. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the coaching staff for their unwavering support,” said Barnes. “Your faith in me meant everything. I believe God has a plan for while my journey takes a turn. The memories and gratitude remain. Thank you Virginia Tech!”

Now that Barnes has decided to decommit, the Hokies have 1 CB from t

he 2024 class in 3-star commit Joshua Clarke.

The second year of the Brent Pry era is showing improvements as the Hokies are trying to reach a bowl game at 5-6 overall. Virginia Tech won 3 games last season.

A win over Virginia would mean that Pry and company will be heading to the postseason. After taking a break from the rivalry last season due to the tragic shooting of 3 Cavalier players, the rivals meet again.

Kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
