Virginia Tech, Wake Forest combine to score 17 points in 24 seconds in whirlwind 2nd quarter

Virginia Tech and Wake Forest played a scoreless opening quarter on Saturday afternoon, but that quickly changed in the second stanza.

The Hokies and Demon Deacons combined to score 17 points in just 24 seconds in during the second quarter.

The sequence with with a 37-yard field goal from Virginia Tech with 4:23 remaining in the quarter. That field goal gave the Hokies a 10-0 lead over Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons then responded with a 96 yard kickoff return touchdown to get on the board with 4:10 on the clock. It was Demond Claiborne who delivered Wake’s first kickoff return touchdown since the 2021 season.

On Virginia Tech’s very next play from scrimmage, the Hokies responded.

Kyron Drones hit Jaylin Lane for a 75-yard touchdown to put the Hokies back up by 10 points with 3:59 left in the quarter. Lane caught the ball over the middle of the field and then raced through Wake Forest’s safety pairing.

That touchdown gave Virginia Tech a 17-7 lead over Wake. The Demon Deacons were able to tack on a field goal at the end of the half to make it 17-10 at the break. All 27 of those points were scored in the second quarter.

Virginia Tech is 25-13-1 all-time against Wake Forest.
