Virginia Tech entered the the ACC Tournament needing at least two wins to give itself a reasonable chance of making the NCAA Tournament.

The Hokies found themselves down by two points in the final seconds of their game against Clemson — and then Darius Maddox stepped up.

Maddox stepped into a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer that sends Clemson home for the year and puts the Hokies into the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.

Here’s the play:

Maddox came off the bench tonight and finished with 8 points. Keve Aluma (19 points) and Storm Murphy (15 points) were the only Hokies to finish in double figures.

Virginia Tech will now face Notre Dame on Thursday in the quarterfinals. The Hokies likely will need a win over the Fighting Irish in order have a serious case for an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

As it stands. Virginia Tech has just one Quad 1 victory but it does have five wins against Quad 2 opposition. A second Quad 2 win — along with its top-40 NET ranking — would create a compelling case.

Virginia Tech and Notre Dame tip off at 7:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.
