Virginia Tech guard Darius Maddox is getting some big-time respect ahead of the 2022-23 season.

On Monday afternoon, college basketball insider Jon Rothstein singled out Maddox as a potential breakout star for this upcoming season.

Maddox played a major role in Virginia Tech winning the ACC Tournament crown back in March. He scored 20 points off the bench in the ACC Tournament semifinals against North Carolina.

Last season, Maddox 6.4 points per game while playing 17 minutes per contest. He proved to be an elite shooter as he hit 50.6% of his 3-point attempts on a volume of 2.2 tries per game.

He’s likely to have a bigger role this season after impressing down the stretch last year. He scored in double figures in 3 of Virginia Tech’s 4 final regular season games. He also had a 13-game stretch in the middle of the season where he made at least 1 3-pointer in every game.

Virginia Tech losing key players like Storm Murphy and Keve Aluma, but the Hokies should still have a very competitive team in 2022-23 — something Maddox will likely be at the center of.
