Chip West, Syracuse assistant coach, reportedly in the mix for another ACC staff opening

Chip West could be on the move in the ACC.

West has emerged as the target for Wake Forest to fill its cornerback coach vacancy, Adam Rittenberg of ESPN reported

. He worked for Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson at Fordham, and has coached Syracuse’s corners the past 3 years.

West could replace former Wake Forest assistant Paul Williams, who took a job at Stanford. Williams was a key reason that the Demon Deacons have done so well forcing turnovers. Wake defensive backs in 2021 forced 29 turnovers (15 interceptions, 14 fumble recoveries).

West previously coached at Marshall, Charlotte, Howard, Virginia, Old Dominion, James Madison, Fordham and Colgate during a career that started in 1997 as a graduate assistant at West Virginia.

West’s alma mater is Livingstone College, and he also has a master’s degree from West Virginia.

At Syracuse, according to his bio, West was instrumental in developing one of the nation’s top cornerback tandems in freshman Garrett Williams and redshirt junior Ifeatu Melifonwu. Williams earned freshman All-American recognition and was honorable mention All-ACC while Melifonwu picked up second team All-ACC from the Associated Press. Melifonwu was a third-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
