Dave Clawson hints at possible transfer for QB Sam Hartman

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson discussed quarterback Sam Hartman’s future with the program on Tuesday.

Hartman, who is a 5th-year senior, has 1 year of eligibility remaining. Wake Forest is set to play Missouri in the Gasparilla Bowl. That could be Hartman’s final game at Wake Forest.

While speaking to the media on Tuesday, Clawson answered questions about Hartman’s status for the bowl game. Clawson revealed that Hartman plans on playing against Missouri and after that game, will likely begin the process of preparing for the 2023 NFL Draft. Clawson did not rule out the possibility of Hartman transferring to another school for his final year of eligibility.

“I think right now his intention is to go to the NFL, but when the bowl game is over, if there is some incredible offer for him to go to another school and get life-changing money, how could we fault him for that,” Clawson said.

If Hartman does not enter the NFL draft, he could enter the transfer portal to pursue NIL opportunities at another school. In 2022, Hartman passed for 3,421 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 11 games. Hartman would immediately become one of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal.

The Gasparilla Bowl is set for Dec. 23 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
