Wake Forest quarterback Mitch Griffis was impressive in his first collegiate start on Thursday night.

Griffis threw for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns in Wake’s 44-10 win over VMI. He was starting in place of Sam Hartman, who remains out indefinitely while he deals with a medical issue.

“He played really well,” coach Dave Clawson said after the game. “I said going into it, I think we can win a lot of games with Mitch. For him to get this experience and be able to play, whether it’s next week or two weeks or next year, it’s money in the bank. But he’s now played a football game and whatever nerves and jitters of that first start is out of the way. So we’re going to need him and he’s a good football player.”

Griffis said he felt like he was “in a movie” while making his first collegiate start.
