Wake Forest commits 6 turnovers in 1 quarter in loss to Louisville

Wake Forest had a nightmare third quarter in a loss to Louisville on Saturday afternoon.

The Demon Deacons had a 14-13 lead at halftime against the Cardinals, but that quickly disappeared after a Sam Hartman pick-6.

Hartman would go on to turn it over an astounding four more times in the third quarter — three more fumbles and another interception. Mitch Griffis then entered the game and threw an interception of his own.

Here’s Wake Forest’s drive chart from the third quarter:

Wake Forest also turned the ball over on its first possession of the third quarter and then again in the fourth quarter. However, its fourth quarter turnover was fumbled back on the same play — giving the Demon Deacons a chance to score a late touchdown.

This is the second straight week an ACC team has committed eight turnovers in one game. Miami had eight giveaways in last week’s blowout home loss to Duke.

Here’s a clip of Hartman’s first interception that started the downward spiral:

Hartman finished the game 20-of-35 for 271 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions and three lost fumbles.

This is Wake Forest’s second loss of the season. Previously, the Demon Deacons’ only loss was at home in overtime to Clemson.

Wake Forest is now 6-2 on the season. It will go on the road to face NC State in a top-25 matchup in Raleigh next weekend. Wake Forest is trying to win 10+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
