Wake Forest guard Alondes Williams has won ACC Player of the Year, the conference announced on Monday morning.
Williams finished second in the ACC in scoring (19.3 points) and first in assists (5.3) this season. He becomes the 11th Demon Deacon to take home this honor in program history.
Williams in the first Wake Forest player to win this award since Josh Howard did it in 2003. Tim Duncan won the award in 1995-96 and 1996-97.
He narrowly beat out Armando Bacot, who made a late charge by scoring 23 points against Duke on Saturday night. Williams received 41 votes while Bacot was at 31.
Wake Forest did beat North Carolina straight up this season a
nd Williams significantly out-played Bacot in that matchup. He scored 23 points and added 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Bacot scored produced 12 points and 12 assists in the 98-76 loss.
It’s possible these players will meet again in the ACC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday night in Brooklyn.
