Wake Forest star quarterback Sam Hartman is officially out for Week 1.

Coach Dave Clawson confirmed that news on Monday afternoon. Mitch Griffis will get the start as Hartman deals with an undisclosed medical issue.

However, Clawson said Hartman is “progressing well” in his recovery.

“Sam has not been cleared yet,” Clawson told reporters on Monday afternoon. “We feel like he’s been progressing well, but it’s a medical decision that will be made by doctors. This will be Mitch’s game.”

Griffis will face VMI in his first career start on Saturday. The Demon Deacons will be heavily favored in the contest even without their star quarterback.

Griffis has very limited experience at the college level. He threw just 2 passes last season and both were incomplete. In 2020, he completed 4-of-13 attempts for 56 yards, 1 touchdown and 0 interceptions.

He has been receiving praise from teammates and coaches during fall camp as Wake Forest prepares to play several weeks without Hartman.
