Wake Forest to face Rutgers in Gator Bowl after Texas A&M drops out

Wake Forest will be able to play in the Gator Bowl after all.

One day after Wake Forest’s postseason was in jeopardy due to Texas A&M’s COVID-19 issues, a replacement has been named. The Demon Deacons will now face 5-7 Rutgers.

Here’s the official announcement:

Rutgers received a waiver from the NCAA to play in the game on the merit of its 5-7 record and its excellent APR ranking. The Scarlet Knights replace Texas A&M, who announced on Wednesday that it did not have enough available players to participate in the game.

With a win, Wake Forest would improve to 11-3 on the year and match its best season in program history. The Demon Deacons won the ACC and went 11-3 in 2006.

Wake Forest will likely be heavily favored vs. a Rutgers team that will have a little more than a week to prepare.

Kick off is at 12 p.m. ET on Dec. 31.
