North Carolina QB Drake Maye addresses transfer rumors

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye met with reporters late Saturday night after the Tar Heels’ loss to Clemson.

Maye was asked about the potential for him to transfer to another program after his record-breaking season in Chapel Hill. Maye said it was his “intention” to return to Carolina next season, noting his families’ history with the Tar Heels.

“I’m a Carolina kid,” Maye said. “It means something to wear that Carolina Blue.”

Maye’s father, Mark Maye, is a former North Carolina quarterback. His older brother, Luke Maye, starred for UNC’s basketball team as well.

UNC coach Mack Brown has been vocal this week about his frustrations regarding “tampering”

in college football.

As of now, Maye is expected to play in UNC’s bowl game later this month and return to Chapel Hill for at least one more season. He’s slated to be one of the first quarterbacks off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft.

This season, Maye threw for over 4,000 yards and 35 touchdowns. He also led the Tar Heels in rushing. He was in the mix for the Heisman Trophy until a late-season swoon ended his momentum for the award.

North Carolina will learn its official bowl destination on Sunday.
