New details emerge in shooting that killed 3 Virginia football players

Virginia running back Mike Hollins, through his mother, has shared some additional details about the shooting that took place on Sunday night at Culbreth Garage.

Hollins was injured in the shooting as well but has been recovering this week after undergoing multiple surgeries. The shooting took place on a bus that was returning from a field trip to Washington D.C.

“His classmates are grateful for him because they said he saved their lives,” Brenda Hollins told ESPN’s Mark Schlabach

. “He was the first off the bus and told two of his classmates to run, and he went back.

“He said, ‘Mom, I went back. I needed to do something. I was going to beat on the windows because no one else was coming off the bus.’ He said, ‘I was going to beat on the windows. I was going to go on the bus and tell them to come on, get off.'”

The shooting took the lives of three of Hollins’ teammates: D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis and Devin Chandler. A fifth person injured in the shooting, identified by ESPN as Marlee Morgan, is “believed to b

e in good condition.”

The suspect in the shooting, Christopher Jones, is a former walk-on football player at UVA. Hollins told his mother that he spoke with Jones once while on the trip. Here’s an excerpt from the story:

Brenda said Mike told her that he didn’t know Jones, 22, who was still enrolled in classes at Virginia. Mike said he interacted with Jones once on the trip, with each of them saying to the other, “What’s up?”

Brenda Hollins also gave ESPN some insight into Hollins’ condition — both physically and mentally.

“He’s recovering,” Brenda told ESPN. “Mentally and physically, he’s having a hard time. He doesn’t know why everything happened, why he was shot one time, why he is here and not his friends.”

Virginia has canceled its Week 12 matchup vs. Coastal Carolina, which was slated to be the Cavs’ final home game. The program has not yet met made a decision about its Week 13 contest with Virginia Tech.
