The ACC held its winter meetings this week, and among the changes, the conference leaders decided to alter the 2024-25 basketball seasons to accommodate the larger league.

In men’s and women’s basketball, the top 15 teams will compete in the 2025 ACC Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments. What’s more, the men’s basketball regular season will continue with a 20-game conference slate while the women will continue to play an 18-game campaign.

This follows a similar move by the Big Ten, which is also expanding this summer.

The schedule has for months been something conference leaders wanted to preserve. They want to keep the postseason flow that currently works for teams, fans and venues as the tournament runs from Tuesday through Saturday or, Wednesday through Sunday. If the league added an additional day to make room for all teams, it would disrupt that known schedule.

It will certainly impact the personality of March, as teams needing to win their way into the NCAA Tournament will be limited.

This news also comes after the ACC last week announced the venues for future basketball tournaments.
