Dabo Swinney was quick to take the blame after Clemson’s 35-14 defeat in South Bend on Saturday night.

“All the criticism should be directed at me,” Swinney said. “We’ve got to move forward and make sure we respond next week.”

Clemson never threatened in this game. It didn’t get on the scoreboard until there were just over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. By then, Notre Dame had a 28-0 lead and had already scored touchdowns on special teams and on defense.

One of the most disappointing aspects to Swinney was Clemson’s inability to stop the run. Audric Estime and Logan Diggs combined for 35 carries and 218 yards on the ground. That duo was consistently able to move the chains for Notre Dame throughout the game.

“Defensively, we couldn’t stop the run. Period,” Swinney said. “Field position was a real battle all night. They were the better coached team. This is a very disappointing day and it’s my responsibility.”

Swinney called it one of the most disappointing days during his 14-year tenure as Clemson’s head coach.

Clemson faces Louisville at home next weekend.
