Duke is back into the Sweet 16, rolling past James Madison with a dominant 93-55 win on Sunday evening!

With the win, Jon Scheyer will be making his first appearance as the head coach of the program after losing in the second round a season ago. The Blue Devils are trying to get back to the Final Four for the first time since 2022 in Mike Krzyzewski’s final season.

So far, Duke has had little trouble against 13-seed Vermont and 12-seed James Madison and will await the winner of 1-seed Houston and 9-seed Texas A&M. Fans can continue to track all the March Madness odds with Saturday Road’s DraftKings links heading into the second week of the tournament.

Here are the key takeaways from Sunday’s win as Duke rolls on:

Jared McCain’s historic outing carries Blue Devils

Jared McCain has been the 3rd-leading scorer for the Blue Devils this season while shooting 40% from deep, but he took things to another level on Sunday. In fact, he set a program record in the process.

During a big first-half push for Duke, McCain lit up James Madison with 22 points before the break, including 6-for-8 from 3-point range. As a result, the Blue Devils were already up by 22 points (47-25) at halftime.

When it was all said and done, McCain finished the game with 30 points and 8 3-pointers in a viciously efficient performance from the freshman. That performance gives McCain Duke’s single-game record for made 3-pointers in an NCAA Tournament game and the second-most points from a Blue Devils freshman in a tournament game.

Jon Scheyer is getting the defense he wanted

Coming out of the first-round win over Vermont, Scheyer was adamant that Duke needed to be able to win with its defense this time of year. While the Blue Devils shot lights out in the win, this game really got rolling with the defense of Duke.

During the first half, James Madison finished with 25 points but shot 40% from the field and just 1-for-6 from 3-point range. Terrence Edwards Jr. — a true star for the Dukes — was held to 5 points in the opening half as the Blue Devils stifled JMU to build a big lead.

Overall, the lower seeding of James Madison may lead some to write off this performance from Duke, but that discredits a pair of legitimate scorers for the program.

TJ Bickerstaff and Edwards were both phenomenal for the program during the season but were held in check by Duke. Edwards finished with 13 points while Bickerstaff had 11, and the two combined for 8 turnovers.

Duke’s defense is clicking, and that will make Scheyer’s group tough to beat at any round of the tournament. Be sure to check FanDuel for the latest game lines following the end of the second round.

Potential rematch looming

Rest assured, the Blue Devils are not going to look ahead from the next game, but fans might take a peak at the bracket and see a familiar foe potentially awaiting the program in the Elite 8.

NC State’s magical March took another step with an overtime victory against Oakland Saturday evening. The Wolfpack will next face 2-seed Marquette in search of an upset to keep their season alive. But if they do, it could be an ACC vs. ACC showdown to win the region and reach the Final Four.

Duke won the regular-season matchup against NC State but it was the Wolfpack to deliver a big win in the ACC Tournament during the start of their postseason journey. Will the Blue Devils get a shot at revenge in March Madness?
