Duke defeated Wake Forest 76-64 on Wednesday night in front of a raucous crowd in Winston-Salem.

5-star freshmen Paolo Banchero and AJ Griffin led the way, scoring 24 and 22 points, respectively. It was Griffin’s first career start for the Blue Devils.

Griffin made the most of his opportunity, as he drained 8-of-11 shots and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. He also picked up 4 rebounds and blocked a shot in 35 minutes of action.

Wake Forest led for a portion of this game in the first half, but Duke took control just before halftime. Duke went on an 8-0 run in the final minute before the first half and continued its offensive outburst after halftime.

Before it was all said and done, the Blue Devils had made 13 consecutive field goal attempts and stretched their lead to 20 points. The Demon Deacons fought back, but were never seriously threatened a comeback in the second half.

Griffin and Banchero combined for 7 of those 13 consecutive made baskets.

The win brings Duke to 3-1 in ACC play. It’s a nice bounce-back win after the Blue Devils lost to Miami at home over the weekend.

It was also a milestone game for Jon Scheyer, who was Duke’s acting head coach for this contest. He took over for Mike Krzyzewski, who was out with an illness. It was Scheyer’s first time in the head chair since he was announced as Duke’s coach-in-waiting last offseason.

Duke will be in action again on Saturday vs. NC State.
