Georgia Tech is making a serious change in the coaching staff after a disastrous defensive performance in Week 5.

After the Yellow Jackets’ 38-27 upset loss to the Bowling Green Falcons, head coach Brent Key is demoting defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker to safeties coach, according to Zach Klein of WSB-TV in Atlanta. Co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer will take over the sole role of defensive coordinator for the rest of the season.

Georgia Tech was inefficient on the defensive side of the field at home against Bowling Green. The Yellow Jackets gave up 438 total and 26 first downs. Bowling Green converted 10-of-17 on 3rd down conversions against Thacker’s defense.

Former Missouri and Indiana quarterback Connor Bazelak completed 21-of-32 of his passes for 263 yards for a touchdown and a QBR of 84. Running back Terion Stewart rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries against the defense of the Yellow Jackets.

Through 5 games this season, Georgia Tech is ranked 104th in the nation in points allowed per game (30.8), 131st in rushing yards allowed per game (224.2) and 117th in total yards allowed per game (415.8). This was the Yellow Jackets’ 5th year with Thacker as the defensive coordinator.

Georgia Tech (2-3) goes on the road in Week 6 to take on the No. 17 Miami Hurricanes (4-0).
