Louisville basketball will have some special uniforms in February as a celebration of Black History Month.

In a Monday reveal, the Cardinals dropped a special look at the uniforms that will be donned by both men’s and women’s basketball teams in the coming days to honor Black excellence and heritage. The design slightly differs but both have a theme with cream colors and golden flowers.

Per Louisville’s release, the golden flowers reflect those regional to Louisville and include the state flower of Kentucky, the Goldenrod. The cream color is a reference to the “cream of the planet” cultural term:

The cream color is an homage to “cream of the planet,” a cultural term referring to Africa’s abundance of natural resources. The “cream” refers to Africa’s abundance of natural resources, including diamonds, gold, platinum, oil, ivory, natural gas, uranium, copper, cobalt, bauxite and cocoa beans. Africa is the wealthiest continent when it comes to Earth’s natural resources.

Louisville’s men’s team will wear the uniforms during Wednesday’s home game against Virginia. Louisville’s women’s team will wear the uniforms on Feb. 23 while hosting Miami.
