Drake Maye’s NFL Draft stock is continuing to rise as the 2024 draft is now less than 1 year away.

ESPN’s Todd McShay released an updated mock draft on Thursday morning, and he has Maye going No. 3 overall. The Washington Commanders are the team who picked Maye in the mock, but the official draft order won’t be set for months.

Washington is entering the 2023 season with former UNC quarterback Sam Howell expected to compete for the starting job. Howell played sparingly as a rookie last season but could have the opportunity to establish himself as a starter in 2023.

If that doesn’t happen, taking Maye near the top of the 2024 draft could make sense for the Commanders.

Here’s some analysis from McShay:

Maye is 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and has a massive arm. Not only did he throw 38 touchdown passes last season, but he also ran for seven scores and almost 700 yards. Washington might be comfortable with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett at the moment, but the former is a fifth-round pick with one career start, and the latter is a 30-year-old veteran backup on a one-year deal. I understand the Commanders passing on quarterback down the board at No. 16 in 2023, but if they have a chance to get someone like Maye next April, it could change things for the franchise. Washington was outside the top 20 in nearly every passing metric last season.

Maye is the 2nd quarterback off the board in the 2024 draft. USC’s Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, is currently projected to be the No. 1 pick. McShay currently has Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. penciled in as the No. 2 selection.

Last season, Maye threw for 4,321 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was the ACC Player of the Year and led the Tar Heels to a 9-win campaign.
